RIVANNA RIFLE AND PISTOL CLUB YOUTH SHOOTING PROGRAM
The Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club (RRPC) Youth Shooting Program is financially supported by the membership of the RRPC, grants from the National Rifle Association Friends of NRA Foundation State Grant Program and donations from a number of supporters of youth shooting of their time, equipment, supplies and monies. Currently, the program charges no fees to the participants and is open to any youth in the community between the ages of 10 and 18.
The primary program involves shooting .22 caliber rifles at paper targets on the RRPC’s indoor range. Air rifles, air pistols, .22 pistols, BB rifles, centerfire rifles (“high power”) and shotguns may also be fired, depending on the interests of the youth and their parents, as well as the availability of firearms. The RRPC supplies the equipment necessary for youth to participate, but individuals are welcome and encouraged to bring their own equipment if it is suited to the types of programs that we conduct. Safe gun handling and marksmanship skills are emphasized. Participants can earn NRA qualification awards (certificates, patches, pins, medals) as they continue to participate and improve. There may be opportunities to participate in competitive events on the local, state and national level. Age for participation is 10 to 18. Currently, the cost of paper targets, .22 ammunition and pellets, safety glasses and hearing protection are borne by the Rivanna Rifle and Pistol Club. Types of shooting other than .22 rimfire and pellet gun require the participants to pay the costs related to the shooting (i.e. ammunition, clay targets, etc.).
A parent, guardian or an adult who is responsible for the youth participant must stay at the club during the practice time and such adults are encouraged to participate in the program with the youths (or just wait in the club room, if they choose).
Practice times currently (as of January 2010) are the 2nd and 4th Sundays each month from 4-6pm (check calendar for months with five Sundays, where there will be 3 weeks between practices).
